Mise en Scene

Costume:

This image shows the typical costume of men within some Gritty Realisms. They are wearing loose fitting clothing with trainers. These clothes are stereotypical of people from estate areas, when seeing people like this some may think of a bad area. The loose fitting clothing within this context could suggest that the people within the filming are quite lost in themselves or their ways. The clothing allows them to hide a bit rather than well fitting clothing which would be showing themselves off a bit more. As well as this caps, or hoods being up are often used. This adds mystery to the characters because you don't know much about them and it emphasises their hiding. Furthermore the clothing used is often quite cheap, which adds to the fact that the people featured within gritty realisms aren't well off. Some of the clothing is "designer" however in real circumstances these may be fake. Camden town in London is a prime example of where a gritty realism could be filmed yet designer labels are worn by a lot of people. Within Camden there are a lot of stalls which sell "fakes". This overall costuming is good for the producers within gritty realisms because it is low cost so allows them to stick to their low budgeting costs.

This image shows the typical outfits of girls in some gritty realisms. They are wearing tanks tops which tightly shows their upper body. One of the girls tank top even shows quite a lot of her tummy off. Denim shorts are clearly seen to be worn showing off their legs also. However, most of the girls are wearing baggy trousers which is shown as quite a comfortable thing. Despite this use of baggy trousers they are rolled up slightly. This suggests that the girls within some gritty realisms like to show off a bit of skin. This may be to impress the boys within the films. This is because within some gritty realisms the men are seen as being more dominant and important where as the girls are just put on the side. This showing of skin could suggest that they want and feel they need a guys attention. All of the girls are wearing cheap trainers which stick to the theme in which the men do also.

Make up:

This is a still from Kidulthood that clearly shows the makeup of one of the girls. As you can see the eye make up (mascara) is put on quite heavily due to the clumping together of lashes. This appears frequently in gritty realisms. Not all of their eye make up is dark and heavy but a lot of the time their mascara is done too much. As well as this the make up isn't done so that her face is seen as being clear. In a lot of bigger films make up is done so that you can't see any imperfections at all. With this you can see that she is just a normal girl. Not only can you see the make up within this still you can also see that she is wearing big hooped earrings as well as a gold chain. This comes up quite a lot within some gritty realisms, for example it is also seen in fish tank. Finally adding to the analysis on this image, you can see that her hair is tied up. A lot of the time the girls hair is tied up, "greased back". Or in other circumstances their hair is quite thin and wispy. You can see an example of that through Alisa within Kidulthood.

Props:

In a lot of Gritty Realisms illegal acts are taking place. For these illegal acts to happen, the films need to include props which represent these. For example in bullet boy a lot of guns are used. The props are needed to make all of the situations within the film look and seem real. This makes sure that the audience feels how you want them to. Cigarettes are also commonly used to betray the characters lifestyles.

Within this analysis I have focused on one area within the Gritty realism genre. This is because I can imagine our finished film to focus on these in particular.
