Audience Research

Our audience isn't gender specific, both genders get drawn in to gritty realism because the problems which are within them can effect both. The age of the viewers are most likely to be middle aged due to a selection of factors. People at this age may want to look in to what problems happen within different lives. It would inform them on real life situations. Another factor is that people of this age are most likely to be in well established jobs of which they are wanting to make a difference to the world. However, despite this some of the viewers could be young people which are students. This is because they may want to study other lives for coursework projects and to have an awareness within their lives.

Our audience are reformers, (Young and Rubicam theory). Reformers are a group of people whom want to make the world a better place. They are professionals who have been well educated in occupations such as doctors and teachers. This is because through watching our gritty realism they will be able to look at the effect of problems therefore giving them an insight of how to solve it. They would like the main theme within a film to be social issues. Our audience aren't people whom are mainstreamers. Mainstreamers seek security when investing their time in to watching a film. This means that they will most likely watch a film if it is known to be good. They wouldn't go out of their comfort zone in order to explore films as they don't like change. Therefore liking an equilibrium in the storyline. As well as this aspirers aren't within our audience. This is because they like to upkeep their status. They want to fit in within the crowd therefore tearing them away from the genre of gritty realism. They have hopes and dreams so will enjoy films which will inspire them towards their goals. Finally are succeeders. This group of people whom have climbed the ladder and want to have control of what they already have. This makes them unlikely to be within our audience range because they may feel that gritty realisms are too hectic and out of control for them. Therefore, overall our audience is clearly only reformers. As you can see below the genre of our film isn't the most popular it only has 7 out of 43 people seeing it as their favourite. The audience for our film is fairly small.

Blumler came up with four different types of uses for films. These are; diversion, personal relationships, personal identity and surveillance. Diversion is for entertainment. People who are looking for this are looking for something to do for relaxation. The film should take them away from their everyday life. This could very slightly fit in with our film because it would take the audience out of their life and put them in someone elses shoes. However the film isn't really something that you can relax to. Next personal relationships allows the audience to become involved with there social lives of the characters within there media. It shows them how to act or be around others. This slightly fills in some of the use of our film because it shows people how to interact with people that they wouldn't usually interact with. Thirdly is personal identity, this creates an audience to identify with the characters presented. It puts them in the characters position. With our film the audience could be able to do this because it shows the characters very personally. Its a very intimate genre of film. This will especially count for members of the audience whom are actually going through some of the problems presented. Finally there is surveillance. This is where the audience feel informed on what is happening. This is the main use of our film because it makes people aware of social structures.

To ensure we include things within our opening sequence that our audience would like to see we asked a number of questions in respect to that. We asked what types of scenes people like to see within films.

This showed us that the majority of people like humorous scenes. However, we know that our opening sequence won't include scenes such as this. In respect to this we have taken in to consideration that the market of our film is slimmer than others. We found that scenes we could include within our opening sequence were still popular. We are concentrating on real issue scenes and sad/emotional scenes. These two of which still have good percentages. One of which being around 35% and the other being around 45%. This means that we should concentrate on these two when making our opening sequence. As well as this we asked what people would like to see in opening sequences to narrow down what we defiantly need to include.

This showed us that the thing that we need to concentrate on is introduction of the characters. This is the thing that had the highest percentage of people want. We will ensure that the two main characters are introduced. Finally we asked for personal responses of what would make people continue to watch a film. The thing that came up the most was to make the audience ask questions about what was going on. We can do this by placing enigma codes throughout the opening sequence.

By doing this we have been made clear on who our audience actually is and what we need to do in order to engage them.

  1. WWW: You are using the questionnaire results to explore your target audience and you refer to some theories.

EBI: You need to explain in more detail how/why audiences would be interested in your characters, themes and narrative. What will you do to meet their needs? Will your idea need adapting to attract your audience?
